Ridiculously large diner menu, with very little effort put into the food. You really just have to take this place for what it is - a convenient spot with a nice patio and decent service.

Finally... mimosas.., we just came here for mimosas. It was a great place to sit outside and people watch, service was just ok.

I ordered from Village Den off seamless and it came outside of the time window (arrived in 40 minutes instead of stated 10-25 minutes). The food also showed up cold.

I live absolutely nowhere near here, yet this is slowly but surely becoming my Friday night staple. Fortunately, I have been here every Friday for the last month, ordering pancakes and two eggs. Unfortunately, I've been coming here during Lent, so I have not been able to eat any of my beloved turkey sausages with my pancakes. When it's not Lent, I usually order the Hungry Man breakfast, which is pancakes with bacon, ham, sausages, toast and eggs. The thing is, for a Hungry Man platter, it still leaves me hungry after I'm done. What I like is that it's very non-pretentious, a very no-frills kind of place. It's a diner, come on. One of these days I will order my go-to diner entree: cheeseburger with fries, with lots of gravy on the side.

Love, love this place. It's very quaint (if not a bit cramped) and the food is just down-home and comfy. Get the grilled cheese w/ bacon (which comes with fries, coleslaw and a pickle) and a hot chocolate. I also love looking at the interesting mural on the wall (a take off of The Last Supper, but with famous people...well, more famous than the 12 disciples).

Great find. Inexpensive with great service. Went for breakfast and sat outdoors. Specials with coffee and juice. Total bill with tip for 2 was $21. Would go back for sure.

Do you live in the Chelsea, West Village, MP area? Do you like diner food but find that most of the diners are overpriced and nasty? Do you sometimes just want something simple like eggs over easy but want to eat them in a comfortable environment and not pay through the nose? I hear yah! And so does the Village Den... On our x-mas morning walk my wife and I stumbled upon the Village Den and I think it will be our casual breakfast stop in the neighborhood for the foreseeable future. The Den looks more like a pub than a diner but therein lies its charm. It's nice (especially in the winter) to walk in to the place with its high ceilings and wooden booths. Water is at the ready to help with the hangover and the coffee is there on the spot to wake you up for the day ahead. I've had the same dish my 2 times there and they haven't screwed it up, which is frankly all I ask for with breakfast. What is it that I ordered? The ever classy "2 eggs over easy with American cheese on top." Yah... that's right... American cheese! Hmmmm good. I am a heart attack waiting to happen. The other great thing about the Den is the price is right. Considering the high priced rent in the neighborhood it's nice to find a breakfast place that charges breakfast prices. In summation... there are better places for a nice brunch or to grab an outstanding croissant... but if you just want some eggs and toast and the other things that make life worth living then I think you'll like the Den.

Sometimes you just really need pancakes and bacon for a Sunday morning breakfast. Considering its location (i.e. high rent, fancy restaurants abound in the immediate vicinity), you might expect flashy flambee of whatever or reductions of this-or-that, served in artistic arrangements on fine china. What you'll get is down-home cooking, served in a homey, clean, and comfortable environment by friendly waitstaff and leaving plenty in your pocketbook for your shopping spree down Bleecker. I like this place -- totally completely unpretentious and priced without the "West Village tax" that we are all so accustomed to paying. Nom nom nommmmm.

This is an excellent neighborhood eatery that's been around for ages. It's simple, sustaining food. I had a fried egg sandwich on white toast with mustard and a cup of coffee for $5 even. And the place was packed at 3:45 p.m., late for lunch and early for dinner! Be sure to check out the Last Supper homage mural on the back wall. It features several people from throughout New York's history and will make an interesting comparison with the Last Supper homage at the nearby Art Bar. Go here to eat, then go to the Art Bar for a drink. Mural hopper!

Totally unpretentious, although prices may be a little steep for the quality of the cuisine. Breakfast is solid. Atmosphere and service is simple and nice, clientele is west village - old and young alike, undisturbed by a lot of outsiders.

I used to work around the corner from here, so I used to order for delivery from this place maybe once a week. The Den doesn't have cuisine that's special or mind blowing, but it's a good place for consistently decent food. And if you order for delivery, they get the order right the vast majority of the time, and if they don't then they make it right, so kudos for that. -1 star for increasing prices over the years. Boo. Now on to the food. The burgers are decent, not anything special, though I think they have one called the "Southern burger"? with grilled onions that's pretty tasty. They give you little cole slaw containers on the side, which I actually enjoy a lot, especially with some extra black pepper. I usually don't like most cole slaw, so that's pretty impressive. The veggie burger here is unpretentious but very very good. The salads they give you are pretty fresh and they're big. The turkey burger can be a little dry sometimes, so I'd avoid that. I used to always get the belgian waffle with sausage, which hits the spot with me but won't be enough food if you're a guy or if you're really hungry. The freshly squeezed orange juice is nice and refreshing, sweet and not overly acidic. One thing to AVOID at all costs: the bison burger. Oh my word, it should be illegal to serve that burger. I picked it one day because it sounded interesting, but it was the single worst meal of my life. The smell was disgusting and overpowering--it basically tasted like it was diseased. I felt sorry for my dog as she ate my leftovers that night and I looked on in disgust as I realized she was actually enjoying it.

There those of us that live in the West Village that are not wealthy (shocking, I know!)... We need a place that can be just a regular place... Nothing fancy, nothing overly price, nothing filled with pretentious people... Just a regular place to go have a quick dinner with a friend, or even by yourself... Village Den is my fall back place... The food is consistently decent, the prices are realistic, the staff always accommodating... Cuisine it is not... but being a necessary part of the nabe... it is.

Not your typical greasy spoon diner, in fact, from the outside and even while seated in the quaint, cozy restaurant one would never mistake the Village Den for a diner. However, the laminated menu, the traditional breakfast fare and the choice Greek entrees are sure signs that you are in indeed sitting in a diner. Then confusion sets in again when brown rice, organic salad and wheat wraps are standard selections and a bread basket filled with homemade biscuits (which are amazing) and rolls are served before the meal. The burger deluxe served with coleslaw and a pickle brings me back to diner reality. I was disappointed that the cheesecake had no fruit toppings but the apple crumb alamode was satisfying.

Pretty good diner food - my Santorini wrap was good and the fries were still warm and crisp when they arrived via Delivery.com . Too expensive for what I got, but I liked that it wasn't at all greasy. Unfortunately, although I asked for extra ketchup in my order, it came without any condiments or napkins at all. Which would be fine if I were at home, but I'm at work. Moreover, this shows a lack of customer service, and makes me wonder what my order would be missing if I'd ordered something more complicated. I'm disappointed.

Great great local diner. I've tried the burgers at other places around the neighborhood and we still always come back to this one. The delivery service is unbelievably fast. The outdoor seating is nice too

The Village Den used to be a great neighborhood diner...now it is just a place to avoid. Inattentive services, poor quality food...save your time & money & go elsewhere. They no longer care about doing business in the Village.

  • Elmer S.

I'm accustomed to diner food, which on any given day should be decent, but then there's really bad diner food. This was it. BL brought me to the Village Den after church at Xavier. I wasn't expecting anything special, but I didn't think it would be this bad. I asked for 2 eggs with corn beef hash and I don't even remember what BL ordered. The hash was muddy. YUK! I have to say the staff was attentive and efficient. Good for them! Too bad the food wasn't consistent with the quality of the service. BAD STUFF.

What can I say. The Village Den is a slightly under the radar haunt of West Villagers. I only found out about because my sister works at St. Vincent's Hospital. I definitely have to stop here ever time I come to the Village. Even if I am not in the mood for burgers all I have to do is look roll down the windows to my car and spell the greatness of real burgers. Everything is reasonably priced, as well as cozy. The service is fast and personalized. I don't know about you but I enjoy going to a place that doesn't act like they have done you a favor by letting you in.

i've always had salads in this restaurant, & they're consistently fresh and good! plus the service staff are all attentive and friendly. i also like their interiors, particularly its witty rendition of the Last Supper made famous by Leonardo da Vinci.

  • jill w.

Basic coffee shop food. Lots of options on the menu. I don't think they make very much of the food in-house. The soup tasted like a generic canned brand (which was not very good). Service is quick but food is pretty expensive for what it is.

  • Jean H.

i really like this place. it feels like a cross between a cafe and a diner. the food is a little better than a diner's would be. it's not spectacular food but it's satisfying and it's definitely the sort of regular haunt i'd want if i lived in the neighborhood. very cozy and busy and not too expensive. a true neighborhood joint.

  • Patrice D.

Decent option for diner food, some hate it, I love it because they let my dog stay here on the patio seating. Standard diner fare at West Village prices, but they are attentive and they do a good job when they get to know you. Too many meetings of AA or other neighborhood groups generally on the weekend and at night, so tables might be scarce, but for locals its reliable.

I had a terrible experience at this restaurant! At the end of the brunch, I felt rushed and the waiter forgot to give back my credit card. When I called later to ask about my cc, the manager/whoever answered the phone had the audacity to lecture me on not calling right away. When I checked my credit card account, the restaurant charged $332.20 for a $33.20 check. Now it's another 10 calls to get this charge straightened out. I will never come back.

I was in the area running an errand and the store I had to go to was not yet opened. I did not have breakfast so I stopped here. It was very good. I was seated immediately and ordered breakfast food-two eggs over, bacon, rye toast and coffee. it is reasonably priced and the staff is very accommodating. I would recommend and return.

In an area chock-full of carefully curated menus and chic decor, the Village Den DGAF. This place is awesomely old school with its six page dinerlike menu, tired-looking finishes, sugar packets and ketchup bottles on the tables and, oh yeah, a giant w.t.f. mural featuring a cartoonish rendering of some famous historical NYC personalities in a fanciful da Vinci-inspired Last Supper pose. If this place were in Williamsburg, hipsters would be all over it. As for the food, you can do pretty well for yourself here. Better-than-decent burgers for best-in-neighborhood prices. If you order online, they deliver super fast too. I can't speak to the other 1,000 or so entrees, but the burgers are solid. Don't change a thing Village Den.

  • David H.

Awful food, horrible service and then they tried to get another $20 on our bill for two tea refills. The waiter was an absolute jerk. Way too many options in the area to settle on this mishap. Very disappointing!

Most horrible place to eat in New York. Do not waste your time here. And refills are not free and they will not tell you that till the check comes. Horrible service and food.

Nothing special about the Village Den. It's your typical diner. I've went here once but decided not to return due to the fact that nothing was special about the place. The food was okay (I could've cooked better at home). My father has had soups from here on multiple occasions and agrees it is basic diner food at premium prices.

It's hard to believe a place like this still exists especially after my horrendous experience. This place is dirty and the chef is terrible. The food is prepared without any care. I ordered an egg white omelet with onions and mushrooms. I tasted balsamic vinegar in certain bites. It was as the chef did not clean the utensils from a balsamic dish before preparing my eggs. I told the waitress my omelet was raw and she proceeded to point on my dish to burnt onions on my plate. She said some of it was raw and some of it is burnt. I tried to eat it. After picking through and eating some of it I sent it back. Hector was the one in charge and refused to take the price off saying you ate it. That is terrible for $10. I will NEVER go back and I will not recommend it to anyone else unless you are on a diet and looking to be nauseated. So much for customer service. I know it is only a matter of time before the board of health closes them down. Hector should be ashamed of himself!

Went there on a Friday night when every other place was just super packed. It wasn't at all empty so we were seated right away. The staff was very friendly and we weren't ever rushed or anything when we decided to sit a bit after our meal for a chat. This is a diner, so expect diner food. We had a jumbo cheeseburger and a triple decker club. Both very good. Be sure to check out the massive NYC Lord's Supper painting on the east wall. I'd definitely go back.

  • Jackie D.

Pretty terrible, even when all I ordered was a grilled cheese sandwich and some sweet potato fries via Seamless. The fries were soggy, the pickles were slimy and the grilled cheese was far too greasy. Couldn't finish it and most of it went in the trash.

On a cold and snowy day in the city there is no better medicine than seeking solace in a warm and hearty restaurant - The Village Den is just that! From the moment we walked in the door, our waiter was terrific and friendly. We ordered the vegetarian primavera pasta which came with a choice of soup and salad; this was delicious, vibrant, cheesy and big - all things you want in a pasta dish! My partner ordered the vegetarian burger w/ french fries and although it was simple (just lettuce, tomato and a veggie patty) in the best possible way, not overdone. In closing, while the food was good, I simply cannot rave enough about the service, we felt truly welcome - and on a cold day this is all you want! We will definitely be back :)

This place is basically a diner, so order what you'd like from a diner menu (not some fancy challah french toast dish - which was bland and blah). The egg salad sandwich was great. The staff was friendly, and they have cosy booths, and it had a very comfy diner atmosphere.

  • Kristina D.

This is a diner. Expect diner food, and your experience will be much better than the other reviewers' who tore this place apart. Perfect place to get your food fix after a day or night of drinking. In our case, it was the gay pride parade and we stumbled in for an early dinner. Service was actually really good and both the server and host were very nice. Our waiter did mess up my friend's order, but he was very apologetic and fixed it quickly. We were with a decent sized group, and he even offered to split our checks for us which I thought was very nice. Food is typical diner food- breakfast all day, burgers, fries, wraps. No gourmet meals. I had a greek salad wrap with grilled chicken which I thought was very good. My friends had the typical burger and fries and no one had any complaints. If you're looking for something cheap and quick, you can absolutely do worse than the Village Den.

Terrible food & terrible customer service - DO NOT GO HERE. Because of Village Den, I've experienced one of the worst cases of BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE, ever. I ordered a Veggie Panini this afternoon and upon taking the first bite I was immediately appalled. I bit into what seemed to be plastic, it was foul and it resembled something like garbage wrapped in plastic wrap. It was awful, I ran out of my meeting because I thought it was going to vomit in front of everyone, and threw it away immediately. After the meeting concluded, I called to explain to the manager at Village Den what happened. He explained that it was probably plastic from the gloves from the workers. REALLY? I politely asked for my refund. He told me NO - that unless I was able to submit a photograph of the nauseating jumble of rot I almost consumed that he could not grant me my refund. An $11 dollar refund, at that. What is the price you're willing to pay to apologetically reimburse an incredibly angry and displeased customer who has the all power in their hands to tell the world about how your restaurant is not only DIRTY but has HORRIFIC customer service? Apparently not $11. I'm shocked.

Ordered an egg salad platter for delivery---it was huge, came with homemade potato salad and fresh tomatoes and cucumbers. Perfect for a prickly-heat type of summer night. Will definitely order again.

One of the better diners in the area. Small chef salad was huge. And sitting on the patio gives a great view of hotties walking out from the gym.

Such a bad experience with this place today. I ordered an egg salad platter for me and a tuna platter for my brother. It was so weird. A big plate of coleslaw, some other weird mash of something, cucumbers, lettuce, and maybe a quarter of a cup of egg/tuna. I understand the platter should come with additions but not this overwhelming.

My feelings are mixed, I ate here for my 1st time and it was good. I returned for my 2nd visit and it was horrible. This place was recommended by a friend, she always orders Greek salads, which I don't, so I guess it's safe to assume that the Greek salads here are amazing. During my 1st visit, I ordered grilled pork chops, brown rice, and a baked yam. Everything was ok. I returned for my 2nd visit and ordered a breakfast special which includes a steak, eggs, toast, a beverage, and a complimentary mimosa. My food arrived and everything looked pretty good so I began to eat. I cut a small piece from the charred section of the steak and tasted it then immediately spit it out onto a napkin. It had a freezer burn or spoiled kind of taste so I immediately inspected the meat a little closer and realized that it was a grey ish color as if it was microwaved and not grilled. I asked the waiter to return my food and my appetite was ruined so I didn't want to order anything else. The bill came and they charged me for the free mimosa and an iced tea which also came with the meal as a package. Wow, they didn't even comp the beverages. I didn't complain, I paid and left. Me not returning or recommending this establishment will hurt them more. Sorry for the 1 star but it is what it is.

We came across this place after everything else in the area was on an hour + wait. We were seated shortly after, in a crammed area. I was amazed and pleased at how quickly we were seated and greeted. That's where it went down hill. We placed our orders and one of our guests were forgotten and wasn't able to place his order. The server returned and didn't know what we ordered for drinks. Food was delivered and orders came out incorrectly. I approached management and was told "we're busy! Can't you see?" Shortly thereafter a server came over to correct the order and no apology was ever issued. Food was tasty and the company I was with was great; but, everything else was awful! I do NOT recommend

Please get rid of the annoying radio channel. It plays at a level that sounds mainly like static, with long gaps for commercials. The constant announcer hype is painful. Otherwise this place is great. A long-standing diner with above-average diner food. I'll always stop by when I'm in the area. Just get rid of the radio, you're killing your customers!

This is the closest I have to a neighborhood diner, and I try to take advantage of its presence as often as possible. They make a great chocolate egg cream (one of the few pregnancy cravings I've been having lately). I also really like their omelettes (how many diners do you know of that offer goat cheese in their breakfast items?) and BEC's (that's bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches). I love the fruit salad, which is always fresh and abundant with a variety of fruit, and the pancakes are huge and fluffy. As for other meals, I make it a point never to order dinner from a diner, but their lunch options are on the money: perfect grilled cheese sandwiches and turkey clubs with fresh turkey, crispy bacon, and fresh lettuce and tomato. Nice variety of burgers and Greek fare, too. The prices are a bit heftier here than you'd find at a run-of-the-mill diner, but hey, that's the West Village for you! Staff is really nice and the Den is never lacking in patrons.

LOVE this spot. Very old school NYC. Nothing pretentious, just good ole diner food. Stopped by last week for breakfast. Ordered the deluxe bagel and lox plate with all the veggie trimmings, as did my two friends. The morning we went, it was a little chilly out and I was appreciative that my coffee cup was always full and steaming. While a little pricey, it was well worth it. I'll be back.

When in need of comfort cuisine with my mom at St. Vincent's we headed here. This place just looks like a good old school diner. Corner loc. with comphy booths, homey decor- with a mural of the last supper that includes NY characters like the Yankees old manager Joe Torre. The service here could not have been nicer or more generous- telling us that soft drinks were included with our lunch special. $9.95 for a beef gyro with salad, tzatziki, fries and a seafood bisque soup. Fries were tasty though food was definitely old school, you could see why this place looks so beloved.

What a relief to find this place while walking up Greenwich on a snowy day with a hungry stomach and a hungry child with same. It's a large and nostalgic space, with booths, and perfectly reasonable diner food. Service a little absent-minded but friendly. I thought all the places like this had closed long ago! Check it out if you're interested in satisfying hunger rather than some sort of scene dining.

I don't know what the people who gave this place high marks are smoking, but my experience was incredibly unsatisfying. First of all, for an establishment that is in the middle of the village and flies rainbow flags all over the place, this restaurant was very un-gay! The waitstaff were all humorless, obviously straight guys who seemed to speak not-great English. Before I ordered, I asked if the burger I wanted came with sauteed onions or fried onions. I wanted fried and would've asked for them that way if the waiter had said "sauteed." He said "they are fried" so that's what I ordered. When they came sauteed I said "I thought the onions were supposed to be fried" and he said "no, they're sauteed." I said, "you told me they came fried." He said, "No, they are sauteed. Do you not want these?" I told him, no, I wanted fried so he said "ok, I'll bring you some." He then brought me a plate of extra-crispy sauteed onions and seemed not to give two shits that he had not only misled me when I initially ordered, but that I obviously didn't touch the second batch of onions he brought me. To make matters worse, the burger was supposed to come with A-1 sauce on it, which it did not. The patty was also overcooked, despite me requesting it done "medium" and the sauteed mushrooms (which I didn't want, but didn't notice on the menu until it was too late) weren't sauteed at all and came pretty close to uncooked. It didn't matter to me, as a mushroom hater, but it would've mattered to a mushroom eater. Overall, a really dissatisfying experience and I would've been a lot more irate if I hadn't been there with a big group of friends to distract me and calm me down.

I will never go back here. Do not eat here if you can avoid it. I ordered their Roma panini. It is not a panini; it is a soft pita sandwich and the veggies inside it were soggy and tasteless. I asked them whether they had a panini press or could press the sandwich on a grill. They didn't seem to know or care what I was talking about. I was in a hurry and made myself eat half the sandwich. They refused to concede that what I received was not a panini and they refused to give me any discount despite the fact that I've been there before. Plus they were rude. Seriously avoid.

This place is a find! It's a diner, in a very cute, old-school West Village type of space. Loved the "Last Supper" mural with the NYC icons. Service was attentive and polite, particularly since it's a diner. The prices for a NYC brunch are outstanding, and the food quality for a diner is pretty great, too. I ordered the breakfast special, served only until 11 am. One egg, sausage, greens, potatoes, toast, juice, and iced coffee. It cost me $7. No joke. Even at 12 pm on a Sunday, it wasn't crowded. (Maybe everyone was at the beach.) I will definitely be coming back here.

Kind staff, great fresh squeezed orange juice that comes with breakfast. Simple, unpretentious and reasonably priced breakfast - with quiet, good classical music and free newspapers. Open early. The Greek omelette is delicious and they have bialys and half grapefruits.

I was here yesterday with three others around 6:00 Pm yesterday for a little post-meeting snack/nosh. 2 of us (me included) just ordered the hot chocolate with Whipped cream ($4 including tax & tip) 1 person ordered the grilled chilled cheese sandwich (came with fries) 1 persons ordered some other sandwich. Not sure what she ordered but it was big enough that she couldn't finish it. Also both sandwiches also came with cole slaw. The service was very attentive When it came time to pay the check, they were very gracious about getting us change since we all had 20 dollar bills.

Check your bill carefully. I ordered the Challah French Toast which on the menu said it came with butter & syrup. I asked the waiter if the syrup was maple syrup and he said yes. The Challah French Toast was decent - and a very good portion size. When I got my bill I noticed a $2 charge for syrup. The waiter took the charge off (I told him I wasn't going to pay for something that #1 the menu said was included and #2 the waiter did not indicate would be an extra charge) - but I left feeling like someone was trying to pull a fast one on me. Also, nowhere on the entire menu did it ever say that maple syrup was $2 extra. When your french toast costs $6.50, a $2 extra charge for syrup is a lot.

Okay H, L, A and I were shopping around and decided on an impromptu dinner - unfortunately, Flex Mussels wasn't into that and we would had to wait for an hour for a table. There wasn't even any room around the bar area - it was ridiculous. We decided to walk around and I would have suggested something else, but H said N used to come here to eat and so we ended up going into VIllage Den. I am not into diner food - I definitely would not come here when I am sober. Ugh, I looked over the menu and I just wasn't into it, but whatever we're here and it is late and we're starving. L loves pastrami and you can't get that in Paris, so L got a hot pastrami sandwich and thought it was decent. L still wants one at a place that L think is down in a basement somewhere. A, H and I all got the Chicken Fingers - chicken was dry and that was it. Dinner was not memorable at all.

You either love diners or hate them. This place doesn't hold a candle to places in the Jers, but for Manhattan it's pretty bloody great. This place though is hard to not like... at least a little bit. It's the perfect size, has a nice array of outdoor tables, and the food is cheap and delicious.

This place would be better off if it didn't try to pass itself for a diner. the menu is a diner all the way, and that's the shame of it, because the more items available the lower the quality of the food. That said, there are many items here that are OUTSTANDING, and much better than at most more sophisticated non diners. Their chicken pot pies on Thursdays are delicious. So too is their soup. Great french fries, pretty darn good burgers. I'm particularly fond of their Louisiana burger. Their BBQ is pretty good, better than Bone Lick Park across the street, and they are a BBQ place. Love their french toast. Waiters are hit or miss here. Delivery available till they close at midnight. Great hours.

If this place could deliver to the upper west side I would eat here all the time. The burger and fries was amazing and I even enjoyed the service. All in all it's a place that I think most people don't know about but maybe it's better that way...

What a drag. I had an appointment on Greenwich Avenue and could not believe that The Village Den was still in business since the first time I ate there was 1978. I went in and ordered a $6 breakfast special which consisted of 1 egg, home fries, toast, small juice and coffee. The coffee tasted like it was made in 1978 and the food was ice cold. I told my waitress who returned my plate to the kitchen and came back with the same egg and home fries which obviously had been thrown into the microwave for 30 seconds because it was hot in some places and still ice cold in others. I said I would pay for the super small glass of tomato juice and the coffee, they charged me $4.80. I guess you can go home sometimes, but certainly not if home is The Village Den.
